Counselling for Addiction
Addictions can be destructive. Furthermore addictions often start as something harmless but suddenly you are ambushed; you cannot stop doing something that is becoming harmful to yourself and to others.
You may find that your addiction gives you some form of relief and distraction from difficulties you are encountering. Perhaps you have endured life as threatening or painful. You may now have feelings of guilt and shame as you try to manage the addiction; perhaps you are trying to keep it or its consequences away from others, especially those you love.
– Pain from the past?
Often those who succumb to an addiction will be suffering from some form of pain from the past. Often without knowing the impact of what may have happened. The addiction will generally release some form of ‘high’ which assists in your addictive pattern. The brain associates the addictive event with nice feelings; which makes the pattern harder to break. This often leads to stress and anxiety.
As such addictions can take many forms and arise for many different reasons. This will have different consequences to you and others. In working with you help you look at how the addiction may have arisen and why it continues.
– Together we would:
- explore how you feel now,
- how you have felt in the past,
- how the addiction might best be tackled,
- look at how life might work better for you without your addiction,
- so that life provides you with reward and fulfillment.
